It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It is the most wonderful time of the year!  There is an electricity that comes with the Christmas season.  Everyone is more tolerant.  We find people are more willing to take care of their neighbor.  And who can forget the Christmas cheer.  I have fond memories of trips into Manhattan, visits to Rockefeller Center to see the Christmas tree, and the soothing smell of roasted chestnuts coming from the street vendors on every corner.

This year, relying on memories of year’s past will help us to make the New Year bright.  But years ago, it was the birth of our Savior that gave the world hope and a star that made the new year bright!  An angel of the Lord came to the shepherds in the field to proclaim the good news of our Savior’s birth.  And the heavenly host praised God saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men” Lk 2:14.

And even though Herod sought to kill our Savior before He could accomplish His goal, three wise men followed a star to find Jesus in Nazareth, where they found Him.  “…Lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.  When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy,” Matt 2:9-10.  This is the time of joy, peace, and good will toward men.  It is the most wonderful time of the year!

As we venture out to finish our last-minute shopping and preparations for our Christmas feasts, remember the joy and peace the world felt when our Savior began His journey to gain the victory over Sin and Death.  This sacrifice is the reason for the season.  He was born to give us the greatest gift—eternal life.  And we can experience this grace all year long!
